What are you supposed to do with your gingerbread house after Christmas? Do you eat it or throw it away? We tossed ours after keeping it for a month last year, but this year, Roy wanted to eat the cookie before it gets too old.  So we tore the house down! The marshmallow roof was not edible anymore, but the cookie part was still quite tasty.

クリスマスの後、ロイが今年はジンジャーブレッド・ハウスを食べる、というので早々と解体しました。10日程しか経っていないので屋根のマシュマロを除いたクッキーは（空焼きをして）まだおいしく食べられる様です。

解体はあっけなく終了、ホリデーシーズンが終わるのを実感しました。

We hosted Christmas dinner at our home with Roy’s family, so it was a quite busy week, so now, we are trying to do very little and relax for the coming New Year.

I estimated that it would take 5 days of work to get ready for the Christmas meal, so Roy could shop for groceries & I can cook gradually. The menu wasn’t big and no one in the family eats that much, so I thought this would be an easy plan to follow. For some reason, I started with this gingerbread house, which took forever to finish. It is modeled after one of the houses in Park Güell by Antoni Gaudi. I ended up improvising a lot of it, which was difficult, but if I make another one, I’ll improvise again! I’ll save the pattern for the next time, even if I don’t stick to the plan.

This year, I created the menu as a tribute my family in Japan. My mom was planning to visit us for this holidays, but for several reasons, she needed to postpone the visit. She lives in Sendai, where the epicenter of the earthquake last March.  This was the first Christmas my mom didn’t celebrate for as long as I can remember. She is very into decorating her apartment & cooking a special Christmas meal for guests, but this year, she lost most of her tableware and favorite dishes, which is one of the reasons why she was not in a festive mood.

I tried to come up with a few dishes to remind myself my mom’s Christmas, and imagine what it might be like to prepare the meal with her. Both the Bûche de Noël and Strawberry Mousse are her standard desserts, and we always had icebox cookies in the fridge when I was growing up. A paella is one of her regular dishes too. So after practicing a few times, I made a pesto paella. I needed to check with my friend in Spain if I can still call it paella, (she said yes) and I drew a poinsettia with red peppers on top.

I guess little of the meal was familiar to Roy’s family’s traditional Christmas meal, but I’m thankful that they dealt with my choices.

Christmas is coming in a week, and I’m still thinking about the holiday menu. I’m trying to come up with little Christmas twist for every dish to make our table festive. We had a very easy Thanksgiving last month at Donna & Vincent’s apartment (aunt & uncle), so Christmas is our turn. We are hosting 12 people dinner.

Before Thanksgiving, we celebrated Isabel’s birthday.  We also wanted to practice serving a sit-down dinner, as we have had a few dinner party requests. Compared to our regular finger food madness, the preparation was much smoother, and we feel as if we didn’t have to rush anything (a lot usually gets done at the last minute!). We learned a lot about how to time the serving of each course. We also enjoyed the evening with excellent company.

Purple was the theme and this was the menu.

Purple martini (紫のマーティーニ）

あと１週間でクリスマスということで準備に追われています。今年は先月の感謝祭が”お呼ばれ”でラクをした分クリスマスがうちの担当です。何事もシンプルに、という主義の(夫の)家族ですが、おいしい物好きも多いし、うちに来る時くらいは華やかにと思い、あれこれと考えつつも未だにデザイン画の段階です。ただ、実現するかは別として、この計画の段階が私には一番楽しいです。

感謝祭の前はフレーバーパレットのパートナー、イザベルの誕生日がありました。仕事としてはいつもフィンガーフードがリクエストされるのですが珍しく着席ディナーのお話を頂いたので、練習を兼ねたコースメニューにしてみました。今回は全てを紫色にしたので、思っていた材料が揃わず色を出すのに慌てたりもしましたが、フィンガーフードの細々とした作業が寸前迄ないのはかなり楽でした。温度やタイミング、給仕係を雇うのがいいか等、色々参考になりました。

日本の皆様はお正月がやはり山場でしょうか、素晴らしいホリデーシーズンをお迎えください。

先日カテゴリーに日本語を表示する作業をしていたら、タイトルにブルックリンとついているのに、この界隈についてのポストが全然ない事に気がつきました。
そこで私がブルックリンで、というよりニューヨークで最も愛するお店をご紹介したいと思います。

古めかしい雰囲気のサハディ(Sahadi’s)は中近東の食材を中心に置くお店なのですが、バラエティに富んだ品々が並んでいます。ナッツ類や穀物、乾物、オリーブ各種などは量り売りです。この売り場は人気なので週末や平日の夕方はあまり広くない店内がぎちぎちに込み合うので整理券を確保して順番を待つ事になります。
ほどんどの人が買って行くのではと思われるのがお総菜売り場にあるオリジナルのフモス（ひよこ豆のペースト）です。うちではこれとタラモサラタ、生ハムなどとスパイスたっぷりのナンが常備食となっていて、朝食は大抵この組み合わせです。
よそのお店にも卸しているオリジナル商品の他、チーズやスパイス、オイルの種類も豊富、中近東やヨーロッパからの珍しい輸入品も多いので、料理好きや食べる事好きの友人知人を案内すると大抵狂喜されます。
今の私達のアパートからは徒歩１５分ほどですが、引っ越す前はどの物件を見てもつい”ここからサハディまでは。。。。？”と行き方をシュミレーションしてみていた程、私達の食生活には重要なお店です。

市内在住の方にもお薦めですが旅行者の方がお土産探しに覗いても楽しいかと思います。１２月はホリデー用品の特別店舗が同じ並びにオープンしています。（日曜がお休み）

Musée Jean Cocteau　/　Collection Séverin WUNDERMAN

This weekend the city of Menton, in the French Riviera, celebrated Jean Cocteau with a new museum. This came about because of a generous donation by an American collector, Severin Wunderman.The fantastic building was constructed specifically to showcase Cocteau’s works, designed by architect Rudy Ricciottin. Cocteau had a special relationship with city of Menton in the 50′s. He created a number of artworks while there, and was also commissioned by the city to complete a mural in City Hall. Cocteau also designed his own museum in a small and abandoned fort, “Le Bastion”, which was later transformed into the Musée Jean Cocteau in 1966.

I’ve always admired this multi-disciplined artist and visited Menton in ’98.  Besides “Le Bastion, Menton was very fun to walk around and was very cosmopolitan, I felt like seeing people from Cocteau’s set of drawing. I’d like to plan another trip there sometime in near future. (I need to convince my husband first!).

今週末、イタリア国境に近い南フランス、マントンという町に詩人／芸術家のジャンコクトーの新しい美術館が開館したそうです。

もともとマントンには本人がデザインした小さな美術館（廃墟になっていた要塞を市長にかけあって譲り受け、自ら修復）と、市庁舎には実際に結婚式が挙げられる”結婚の間”に壁画があり、コクトーファン（私です）にははずせない土地なのですが、新しく加わる美術館は規模も大きく、建物自体がアート作品の様です。アメリカ人収集家の作品の寄贈によって実現したそうです。

私も十数年前母とマントンを訪ねたのですが、この海辺の街は町並みもかわいらしく、雰囲気がとても魅力的な土地でした。混雑したニースの後 に行ったのでよけいにゆったりと散策出来たのかもしれません。コクトーは漁師と女を題材にした連作を残しているのですが、行き交う人々は 多国籍な感じの人が多く、まさにこの連作に出てくる様な印象を持ったのを覚えています。
ところで、十数年前のフランスでは一緒に行った母は何度もナンパされていて、私がかわりに断ると”子供は黙ってろ”などと言われたので、フランスは大人の女の国だなあ。。。とつくづく痛感した思い出があります。

パリ郊外のMilly-La-Foretという町の、1963年に亡くなるまで晩年を過ごした一軒家も去年、美術館として生まれ変わっているので、なるべくはやく次回のフランス旅行の計画を立てたい所です。

The main part is tilapia fish, rice (& nori) legs and red pepper shoes. The side come with Daikon salad, Tortilla, and vegetable meatloaf.

私の今年のハロウィーンは風邪っぴきで、行く予定のパーティーを次々とキャンセルしています。残念で家でくさっていますが、ここ２０年程ハロウィーンには騒ぎ続けていたので、今年くらい休憩するのもいいかも知れません。

お魚とご飯のお弁当はマスクをして制作、靴は炒めたパプリカです。わかりにくいですが、”オズの魔法使い”にでてくる東の悪い魔女が家の下敷きになった足です。

ところで多くの日本のメディアではハロウィーンを”ハロウィン”と短くしているようですが、見る度に省略されてる様で気になってしまいます。これは日本語なんでしょうか？（ハロウィーン、とのばして欲しいな。）

Last month, we did our last summer BBQ party on Isabel’s balcony. The theme was polka dots, and we made everything round to make it fit the theme. Isabel’s brother and sister were vising NY from Switzerland and polka dots happened to be Isabel’s sister’s favorite pattern, so they were very happy to join in with us. We like to do theme parties and ask the guests to wear a particular pattern, and it’s not always so successful. This time, we prepared some polka dot scarves and ties for the guests to wear, so everyone had something on to enjoy the night. I was very happy to see that!

随分時間が経ってしまいましたが、先月イザベルのお兄さんと妹がスイスから来ていたので、今夏最後のBBQパーティーをしました。テーマは水玉。丁度イザベルの妹が水玉好きらしく、とても喜んでくれました。
テーマパーティーをするとき、私達はよくそのテーマの服装（例えば色などを何処かに使う、など）で来てくれるようにゲストを招待するのですが、なかなか大勢の人に着 て来てもらえる割合は低いのが現状です。今回はそこを見越して水玉のスカーフやネクタイなどの小物を随分用意しておきました。嬉しい事に皆何かしら付けてくれて、珍しく全員水玉に なりました。

秋になり、アートも本格的なシーズンの始まりです。多くの美術館やギャラリーで、新しい展覧会がいっせいに始まり、次々に変わってくので、うっかりしていて最終日ギリギリに見に行く物ばかりになっています。

なかでも韓国人のアーティスト、ドーホー・スーの個展は見逃すまいと思っていたのですが、やはりひときわ印象的でした。
細かいディテールに、長々と見入っている人でギャラリーは一杯でした。代表的な透ける布を使った精巧な作品と一緒にメインに展示されていたのは、まっ二つに切断されたミニチュアの家で、大まかに言うと東洋の家（作家が育った韓国の家）が西洋の家（留学の滞在先）にパラシュートで突っ込んでいて家の中身は全て西洋の 家の仲に流れ込んでいるという設定になっており、作家が２０年前アメリカに初めて越して来たときのカルチャーショックを表現してるそうです。

私も自分の２０年前を思い起こしてみたりと、視覚的にも内容も興味深かったです。
